In Praise of Public Gatherings

As a photographer I’ve been photographing events for six years now. What brings me back to them? I think there’s something magical about being in a group of people. As a child I had great memories of seeing the tall ships with the crowds of people and the various spectacles. Or the groups that go to the fireworks. As a kid I rolled down the hill with my brother and we got separated from my parents. It was great but they were freaked out. I don’t remember being scared. I think in the mind of a child there’s nothing to be scared about being yourself around other people. Running around and being free.

I believe a good city needs to have engaging and inclusive public events. A good public event needs to educate people about the important issues in their community and raise awareness of the arts. It needs to be well funded and staffed. This is one of the central parts of how a government can be a force of good. To help the community share the love of being with each other.

These are some moments from the times I’ve spent photographing the joys of life.
