On March 15 there was an international student strike for climate change. At 12 noon a group of students walked from Citadel High down to Grand Parade Square to demand that their government do more to address the climate crisis. As with every event I took a journalistic approach and tried my best not to affect what was going on too much, or at least to the best of my abilities.
What started out as a group of students standing outside Citadel High School grew to about fifty people as they started to march downtown. Then as we went past the clock tower overlooking Brunswick street we saw a group of people from other schools in the area waiting for us. It was at this point that it became clear that there was a lot of people that were going to be marching.
The sidewalks were crowded and people were standing shoulder to shoulder. The protest grew to its largest size around Grand Parade Square. After talking to the Mayor of Halifax Mike Savage the protesters went to Province House to continue shouting it’s demands. The Provincial government didn’t send anyone out to talk.
It was truly inspiring to see so many people go out to demand action from their government. Those that can’t vote must make their voices heard in some way. Inspired by Swedish student Greta Thunberg it seems as though climate action is on the top of the agenda for many young soon to be voters.
