To me the idea of Newfoundland is the culmination of my childhood memories of summer vacations. Fishing with the grandparents, playing cards in the cabin, and getting away from home. I spent two years on the island after I finished school. I lived with my grandparents during that time and laughed with them, ate food with them, and watched them pass away.
I love Newfoundland. My family made me who I am, and this place helped form those who brought me up. The idea came from wanting to spend time reflecting on myself and where my family came from.
I chose to live in Corner Brook on the west coast, where the winters are long and hard. This place has now left a mark on me. Now it’s not just a place I’ve visited, but it’s become a second home. I took photos the entire time I was there because I felt as though it’s underappreciated in the form of photography. The way the landscape dominates the visual field is unlike anywhere else I’ve visited on earth.
