For today’s blog post I want to share some photos of the water. The funny thing is I’m not even a huge fan of this kind of imagery, I just took these photos while on a camping trip as a way to enjoy the nature around me. I don’t really love seeing photos of nature because it feels like something that’s been done to death. But at the same time I value the ecosystem around me. I believe it’s something to be cherished and protected. I also believe it’s important for a photographer to respect the light and to try to make entertaining documents of the world around them.
One of my favorite rappers that I met at The Hub was Eaumi. His name is a combination of the French words for friend and water and he started out every performance by saying that we should all be friends of the water. Eaumi’s the fucking man.
There’s a certain level of abstraction and artistic “flexing” in these images. I’m certainly not trying to make images of iconic landmarks. In all of my photography the goal isn’t to show myself as a great photographer of one particular subject like street or portrait photography, but to expand the viewer’s idea of what makes a good photograph. Or rather to expand the very language of photography. I want to show people the possibility of great images in everyday situations. Sometimes that means using street photography, and sometimes that means using nature photography. Whatever situation you find yourself in, if you work hard enough you can make something great.
